Pehrentian Island

A 13 hr flight to Kuala Lumpur, 1 hr 30 mins flight to Kota Bharu, 1 hour taxi to Kuala Besut, 40 minute boat road to the Pehrentian islands… And then, you are here!

Fair enough, this island does take a bit of work to get to. But, it’s definitely worth it when you get there. It’s great if you have any interest in snorkelling or scuba diving, the dive center can get you trained up quick at a pretty decent price too. The waters are perfect for diving and snorkelling if you’re there at the right time of the year (I would suggest March, which is when I went).

Malaysian cuisine

I have been very fortunate to have been brought up on Malaysian food, which I must say is one of the best cuisines in the world (I’m not just being biased). Due to the mix of cultures in Malaysia you get a beautiful fusion of Indian, Chinese and Malay food. The array of spices and flavours in dishes are amazing… If you get a chance to head over there make sure you try the traditional cuisine, you’ll fall in love.

Top dishes:

  1. Nasi Lemak (coconut rice, chilli sambal, fried anchovies, boiled egg, roasted peanuts)
  2. Hoikken mee (Chinese noodle dish, my childhood favourite)
  3. Mee-hoon
  4. Kuey teow goreng (fried flat noodles with seafood)
  5. Fish curry (I’m not a big fan of hot curries, but this is definitely one to try)
